Working From Home: Before + After’s of a McLean Home Office

We were thrilled when our client, a busy law-professional mom of two growing kids, reached out to us in need of help with her home office design! Our mission was to create a home office that would function well (and comfortably) for all. If you’re a mother you know that often times kids want to be in the same space that you’re in, so creating an area where everyone can work together sets the whole crew up for success and max productivity!

Our client’s requests for the space-

  • work stations for 3 people (mom and her 2 littles)
  • aesthetically flow with the current decor in the adjoining areas
  • provide lots and lots of storage (since all files were currently being stored in cardboard boxes on the floor)

Take a scroll through the below pics to see where we started. The room was average sized, had great high ceilings (10′), 2 windows with planation shutters that faced the front yard, and hardwood floors.

Since the room was directly to the right of the main entrance when you enter the home we wanted to make sure that it had a very inviting room-like quality. We didn’t want it to look too cold and officey. After playing around with  various layout options we finalized on this one, shown below. We added custom cabinetry to two walls to satisfy the work stations for all as well as the storage needs. We then added a large round table, which would give the kids an area for puzzling or playing board games. We also added a vignette with a console table and large art for a little zhush! The table and console vignette are what kept the space from looking too cold. These additions add a great deal of functional relief and added some aesthetic interest to balance the space.

We also decided to remove the plantation shutters in order to open up the space and get some light in! I don’t know about you guys , but I NEED LIGHT! The shutters seemed so heavy in the small room and blocked out a good bit of that  natural light goodness.

Check out this gorgeous rendering created by one of my bestie’s, Jane Gianarelli ,of our design. This is what we presented to our client so that she could feel confident moving forward with the plan we put together. Let me point out some of the fun selections-

  • simple draperies in a cool abstract pattern by Lindsay Cowles
  • acrylic desk chairs for the kids
  • a slender mirrored console with a large statement piece of art above
  • a cool sconce to light the round wood table
  • a fun light fixture to add interest (we ended up having to select a substitution because this one ended up being discontinued)
  • a custom memo board installed above all of the counter tops to pin pics, invitations, assignments, art, etc.
  • stool on casters that can roll over to the round table for extra seating
  • wallpapered backs to open shelving areas

And here’s the final space all installed!

What do you think? I feel like we hit the nail on the head and checked all the boxes! Big thanks to Cornerstone Kitchen & Bath for assisting with our cabinet needs and to Lisa Tureson for creating our gorgeous statement art. And of course, we’re only as good as our clients! Big thanks to our client for putting her trust in us!!
