It’s time to let loose and go outside, and with the weather getting nicer by the day, spending more time in your backyard is a great way to get away… steps away.
We’ve rounded up some dos and don’ts for selecting the perfect furniture for your great outdoors!
Selecting outdoor furniture for your backyard is exciting. Yet, it does require careful consideration to make the correct choices that will be functional and enhance the area’s aesthetics.
Do’s and Dont’s:
Do: Prioritize Quality and Durability:
Invest in outdoor furniture for the long haul by selecting pieces made from high-quality materials such as wicker, teak, and wrought iron. These materials tend to be durable and semi-resistant to weather conditions. Keep in mind, however, that we are still dealing with the elements and depending on your location, some conditions are harsher than others. We take the “embrace the patina” approach when it comes to outdoor furnishings, as it’s totally normal for the appearance to change a bit over time.
Do: Select Comfortable Pieces
Who wants to sit on a hard chair while trying to relax? Not us! Outdoor furniture should be comfortable to enjoy for extended periods. Look for options with cozy cushions made from weather-resistant materials, of course.
Don’t: Neglect Maintenance
Well, first, don’t select furniture made from material that needs a ton of maintenance… who wants to work while trying to relax? Not us! Steer clear of doing work by choosing items that are easy to clean and put out of mind.
Don’t: Forget About Storage
We know only some have the luxury of extra space, and if you have limited storage, you’ll want to pick pieces that are easy to store or double as storage for cushions and pillows! And consider investing in good covers! Storing cushions, toss pillows, and even rugs can be a breeze if you have great furniture covers. One of our favorite sources is Koveroos; they even make custom sizes for those hard-to-fit pieces.
Lastly, we want to give you our most important do: Choose furniture that reflects your style and blends well with the surroundings. Keep in mind your outdoor living space is an extension of your indoor space and should be handled with the same thought and consideration as your indoor spaces. Why would you spend time and money on creating an amazing hardscape/landscape and then go to Costco or Home Depot to get your outdoor furnishings?
While selecting outdoor furniture requires careful consideration, have fun with it! After all, you’re looking to relax outside, not put yourself to work!
